I've never been a huge fan of coloured diamonds (especially yellow or brown ones)....maybe because some tend to look like birthstones or costume jewellery. BUT I've recently been drooling over these pretty
PURPLE diamonds!
"Purple diamonds with no secondary hues are very rare. Most of these diamonds are less than a carat in size and are very seldom found in dark to vivid lilac colors. So far there have been no larger purple or violet diamonds found which are of historical significance. The purple diamond rough is only mined in Australia.
Purple is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. A purple diamond recently assessed by the British Gemmological Institute has been estimated to be worth over £14 million, and to be the most valuable natural object in existence on a weight for weight basis. This stone weighs between four and five carats. There is a larger purple diamond on display at a Paris museum, but its colour is paler.
Natural purple diamonds are so rare that most jewellers have never seen one, and will never own one."
So there you have it....leave it to me to drool over one of the rarest and most expensive kind of diamond in existance (ok to be clear, i had no idea they were that rare or pricey when I started ogling them!)
To give an example of the price of one of these babies:
This 2.52 carat light pinkish purple diamond (which is only about .2 carats larger than the centre stone on my engagement ring, mind you) with a clarity of only I1, goes for a whopping $150kUSD! Let's just say i obvsly paid less than half of that for my entire ring.
So.Pretty.Though.
I still wouldn't ever get a fancy coloured engagement ring (i prefer the classic and timeless look of a colourless diamond for such things), but i WOULD consider getting a right-hand ring, solitaire necklace, or studs if I had a few thousand laying around.
